Jomolhari Base Camp Trek

12 Days

Overview

The Jomolhari Base Camp trek in northwestern Bhutan is a rugged, high-altitude journey that rewards with raw Himalayan beauty and a deep sense of isolation. Starting from the army post at Drugyel Dzong, the trail cuts through dense pine and rhododendron forests, past yak herders’ camps, and across windswept grasslands. You climb gradually to Jangothang, a glacial valley beneath the towering north face of 24,000-foot Jomolhari, where the mountain feels close enough to touch. From there, a demanding push to the base camp itself—just over 16,000 feet—offers stark views of seracs and icefalls tumbling from the peak. Nights are spent in basic homestays or tents, with temperatures plummeting well below freezing. The trek is not long—usually five to seven days—but the altitude, sudden weather shifts, and rough terrain make it feel much bigger. What stays with you isn’t just the mountain, but the silence: no roads, no wifi, just wind, prayer flags, and the occasional grunt of a blue sheep.
